A tantalizing taste of the first book

PROLOGUE

“This is unit one; Lord Aimsly is missing from the loading area.”  The communicator crackled slightly from interference that the heavy cloud of star-borne chemical outside was producing.
“Where was he last seen?”  Aimsly, Lorin; the crew chief did not need this distraction right now.  The last ship leaving Escellion was due to lift off in less than an hour.  Lorin was anxious to assure Lady Aimsly’s safety.
He had been the Lady’s companion before the cataclysm.  Of necessity, she had gifted him with a soul keeper and released him as a pet that morning.  They were inseparably linked soul to soul until now; but her long journey would have killed him eventually otherwise.   She had been a major part of his life since very shortly after he had hatched.  Lorin loved her dearly.  He knew he would miss her desperately, but he cared for her enough to want her to be safe and happy. He sighed and rubbed the back of his neck.  There was something in the magic that made the separation itch.

“We are not certain sir, some of us thought he was unaffected,” came the reply
“That Dwylin cannot be trusted. Put a flyer crew out looking for him.”  Lorin closed his communicator and went looking for the brute squad.  He was afraid Lord Aimsly was going to need a lot of help getting to safety.   As soon as the Lord was found he wanted his biggest and best guards to take him back.

“This is unit five.  We have just found residual evidence of an open portal to the Aimsly Manor sir.”  The squads were wasting no time.  The situation was becoming critical.  Many lives were in the balance.  They needed Lord Aimsly to be safe and sane and on the ship leaving Escellion.

“I am sending in the special retrieval team just in case he is there. Stand by”   Lorin signaled his biggest and fastest magic users to use force if necessary.  Lord Aimsly had to be on the ship in less than twenty minutes.
